Adult Speaker Series with Positive Living North

Date: Jan 13, 2020 19:00:00

Positive Living North is a non-profit Aboriginal AIDS Service organization located in Prince George, with satellite offices in Smithers and Fort St John. They provide support, advocacy, and education services to those living and/or affected by HIV, and also run a street level drop in centre called the Fire Pit.

A number of changes have been seen in the HIV field that they have had to adapt to and they feel that these incredible advances in the HIV field deserve to be shared!

In the 1980’s and 1990’s, HIV/AIDS was seen as a death sentence, however HIV treatments have advanced significantly since then. With treatment, people living with HIV can expect to live approximately the same life expectancy of those not infected. Furthermore, recent evidence now shows those on treatment that maintain undetectable viral loads are unable to pass HIV onto their sexual partners. Lastly, there are now medications (PrEP and PEP) that at-risk HIV negative individuals can take to prevent HIV infection, which are more than 99% effective! Unfortunately, though these breakthroughs are incredible, stigma, discrimination and shame are still imposed on those living with HIV.
