The GEEE! in GENOME School Programs
In addition to our regular school programs, we will be offering 3 school workshops to complement our current temporary exhibit, The GEEE! in GENOME. These workshops will be offered in May and June of 2010 only. Book early to secure a spot.
Genetics and Diversity Workshop (Grades 5 - 7)
The Genetics and Diversity workshop provides an introduction to the subject of genomics and how it underlies the nature and diversity of all living things. The scientific achievements of contributors such as Mendel and Smith are explored using interactive tools and games. Students examine a series of human traits within their group and compare their results with a national trait frequency chart.
DNA Detectives Workshop (Grades 7 - 12)
The DNA Detectives workshop presents the basics components of DNA, how the DNA code is interpreted, and how DNA codes for proteins. Students are introduced to the concept of mutations and how this creates diversity of life on Earth. They will investigate how scientists look at DNA to solve environmental conservation problems, and will also conduct an experiment to extract DNA from organic material.
Ethics of Genomics Workshop (Grades 10 - 12)
The Ethics of Genomics workshop encourages students to explain and discuss their reactions and understanding of controversial genomics topics, and includes them in a nationwide study on genomics knowledge among high school students. Social and ethical issues related to genomics are explored. The Universal Declaration on the Human Genome and Human Rights (of UNESCO) is presented as an opportunity for greater involvement in the related social debate.
