Camps

Science Alliance Day Camps teach kids about STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math) in a fun, “hands-on, minds-on” interactive setting. Through experiments, activities, games, presentations, guest speakers, field trips, and more, we have gotten local kids excited about science and learning since 1996.

2024 SUMMER DAY CAMP

July 2 – August 23, 2024

8:30am – 4:30pm

Registration is now closed.

Primary: Ages 6-8

July 2-5: Marine Mysteries

*4-day camp; no camp on Canada Day

Dive into the wonders of aquatic life! This week invites young explorers to uncover the secrets of diverse water environments, from the deep sea to bustling lakes and meandering rivers. Campers will learn more about aquatic habitats and their biology, biodiversity, and the unique behaviours and ecosystems of creatures in varied aquatic habitats.

July 8-12: Brilliant Botany

Calling all budding botanists to Brilliant Botany week, where we promise to make weeds as fascinating as wildflowers and turn composting into a masterpiece! Get ready to dig deep into the world of gardening and plant science and uncover the secrets of photosynthesis, plant growth, and the joys of muddy hands. Receive a crash course in “Plant Parenthood 101,” where our beginner botanists will learn how to speak plant—spoiler alert: they’re big fans of sunlight and water! Get dirty with hands-on gardening activities that will have junior cultivators planting seeds, transplanting seedlings, and learning about the science behind plant biology and the wonders of pollination. Grab your sunhat, wield your trowels, and join us for a week of Brilliant Botany.

July 15-19: Engineer Extravaganza

A place where duct tape, glue, and a hammer are our secret weapons, and thinking outside the box is our mantra! Get ready to unleash your inner engineer while building contraptions using water hydraulics, towers made entirely of spaghetti that can withstand an earthquake (or at least a gentle breeze), and bridges created using nothing but popsicle sticks and glue. We will tackle engineering challenges that will have you scratching your head one minute and high-fiving your teammates the next in our Engineer Extravaganza week.

July 22-26: Genius Journeys

Welcome, intrepid time-travelling tourists! Get ready to buckle up in your time machines as we travel through different eras to witness the birth of groundbreaking inventions and discover the genius minds behind them, maybe even inspiring a few inventions of our own! We will zip back to ancient civilizations to explore simple machines, have an apple with Isaac Newton as we learn about gravity, and light things up with Thomas Edison and Joseph Swan as we explore circuits and how they work. Learn about Ruth Wakefield, who invented the chocolate chip cookie, and Hedy Lamarr, whose inventions led to Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and GPS, and explore more about the first practical steam locomotive!

July 29 - August 2: Colourful Chemistry

Get ready to mix, fizz, and bubble through a week of fun and mind-boggling experiments that will leave everyone laughing and learning at the same time. Our mad scientist campers will be armed with goggles, test tubes, and beakers filled with colourful concoctions. One minute, you’re creating a volcanic eruption of foam, and the next, you’re making slime that’s gooier than a melted marshmallow on a hot summer day!

August 6-9: Out of This World Science

*4-day camp; no camp on BC Day

Blast off on a cosmic adventure! This camp will whisk campers away on an out-of-this-world journey through the cosmos. Get ready to explore everything from distant planets and shimmering stars to vast galaxies. Learn about the exciting history of space travel, and keep your eyes peeled for current celestial events! Strap in and prepare for lift-off as we navigate the mysteries of the universe!

August 12-16: Superhero Science

With great power comes great responsibility… Get ready to unleash your inner superhero (or supervillain, we won’t judge!) in a week-long adventure of epic proportions, filled with laughter, creativity, and maybe a few accidental science experiments. Suit up to create a superhero alter ego, complete with a backstory, powers, and perhaps a sidekick or two. Put your superpowers to the test with a series of wacky challenges that will have you flying (metaphorically, of course) through obstacle courses, defying gravity with hovercrafts, and unleashing your inner mad scientist with bubbling concoctions and fizzy explosions. Grab your mask, strike your best superhero pose, and join us for a week of heroic hijinks where the only thing more powerful than our imaginations is our ability to make science awesome!

August 19-23: Biology Bonanza

Biology Bonanza week is your passport to the incredible realm of biology, where you’ll explore everything from the tiny universe of microscopic organisms to the vast complexity of large ecosystems. Packed with hands-on activities, interactive lessons, and exciting experiments, Biology Bonanza is designed to spark your curiosity and fuel your passion for the natural world.

Intermediate: Ages 8-10

You will be able to secure your spot immediately upon registering, but this is only part one of registration. After your purchase, you will be required to log in to our Camp Portal, where you will submit details about your child, such as emergency contacts, allergy information, and more. You must submit these details at least 2 weeks prior to the first day of camp. This information will remain in our system, and will be available for any future camp registrations.

If your child’s information has already been added to the Camp Portal, you must still log in and assign your child to the camp you registered for. You can also update any information as needed.

Age Group
Primary camps and their activities are geared toward children aged 6-8. Intermediate camps are geared towards children aged 8-10. Culinary camps are geared toward children aged 9-12.

Capacity
Each Primary and Intermediate weekly camp is limited to 20 campers. Culinary camps are limited to 9 campers per session.

Hours
Camps begin at 8:30am and end at 4:30pm. We are unable to accommodate campers before the camp start time.

If you are late picking up your child, you will incur an additional fee of $20 per 15-minute increment.

Pick-Up and Drop-Off
Parents/guardians are required to provide two emergency contacts. Adults not listed on the registration form will not be permitted to take campers home unless a parent/guardian provides written consent. Photo ID is required for all adults picking up campers at the end of each day.

A parent/guardian must accompany the camper to the designated drop-off area and sign the camper in/out each day.

Catered Lunch & Snacks
Don’t feel like packing a lunch? Science Alliance Camps come with the option to add on catered lunches and snacks from Origins Kitchen! Menus will be adjusted for those with special dietary needs. See the menu here.

What to Bring
Campers must wear closed-toed shoes that attach to the feet. Please dress for the weather.

Your child should bring:

  • Lunch and two snacks (if catering has not been added on)
  • A refillable water bottle
  • Any special medications or medical devices as outlined in your registration form
  • We ask that your child not bring electronic devices from home (ie. phones, tablets, gaming devices) due to risk of loss or damage
  • Culinary campers should have long hair tied back

Refund Policy
Cancellations received less than 5 days prior to the start of the camp session will not receive any refund of fees, unless a doctor’s certificate stating medical reasons is presented to our staff. Cancellations received 5 to 7 days prior to the start of camp will be refunded 50% of fees. Cancellations received more than 7 days prior to the start of camp will be refunded 90% of fees.

Behavioural Expectations
The Exploration Place strives to provide an environment free from violence and bullying. Campers disrupting the safety and enjoyment of others may require an immediate pick-up. Continued violent or bullying behaviours, after all other reasonable actions have been taken, may result in the de-registration of your child. De-registrations due to behavioural issues will be accompanied by a pro-rated refund for any days of camp the child misses.

Bursary Program

We are very proud of our bursary program, which, thanks to generous sponsors in our community, allows children who may not otherwise have the opportunity to enjoy a week of camp on us. Apply for a bursary here*. (Powered by Do Some Good)

*Note: All 2024 bursary funds have been allocated. You may still fill out the application form, and if more bursary funds are received, you will be notified.

Thank you to our generous 2024 Science Alliance Supporters:

Scouten Engineering

We are looking for community-minded individuals and businesses willing to partner with us to make our camps as successful as possible.

We are very proud of our bursary program, which, thanks to generous sponsors in our community, allows children who may not otherwise have the opportunity to enjoy a week of camp. Outreach is also very important to us—in addition to performing science demos in elementary schools in the area, we also attend community events around Northern BC, reaching thousands of children each year.
