High-energy science exhibit launches alongside the return of the Prince George Sports Hall of Fame

PRINCE GEORGE, BRITISH COLUMBIA – The Exploration Place is bringing in a new travelling exhibition to the George Phillips Exhibit Gallery in September. Extreme Sports: Beyond Human Limits is an action-packed ride through the adrenaline-fueled world of extreme sports. This highly interactive exhibition, developed and produced by Science North in partnership with the Ontario Science Centre, brings visitors inside the minds and bodies of extreme athletes. It explores the psychology of their motivations and the science of extreme sports, including wingsuit flying, ice and rock climbing, parkour, free diving, and many more.

Visitors will discover what it takes to maximize their potential as they explore the psychology and science behind the thrills and spills of adventure sports. They will explore the science behind athletes as they learn about the strength and mentality that fuels extreme sports athletes’ determination. In this exhibition, visitors will:

  • Engage with friends and family in a multitude of physical, multimedia, and creative challenges.
  • Hear from athletes that participate in these extreme activities and how they have persevered through failures and challenges in their sports.
  • Learn about the researchers who study extreme athletes; those who rescue them when things go wrong; and the innovators who create new and novel equipment, and dispel myths and misconceptions surrounding extreme sports.

From exhilarating speeds, breathtaking heights, and profound depths to uncontrolled variables such as weather or terrain – this exhibition tells the stories of how athletes prepare and train extensively to carefully evaluate risks, endure intense physical and mental challenges, and maintain a calm focus.

The opening of Extreme Sports: Beyond Human Limits comes at a time of renewed focus on family-oriented experiences at The Exploration Place. Due to renovations and pandemic-related delays, the museum’s exhibit schedule in recent years has leaned toward more adult-focused content. The launch of this dynamic, high-impact exhibit is part of a broader effort to bring back hands-on, family-friendly offerings that reflect the community’s feedback and interests.

In that same spirit, The Exploration Place will also be reinstalling the Prince George Sports Hall of Fame this fall. Select content from the Sports Hall and museum collection will be integrated directly into the Extreme Sports exhibit, creating a unique blend of science, sport, and local history content. Visitors will have the opportunity to explore the science behind extreme athletics while celebrating the achievements of athletes from our own city.

“We’re really excited to bring in something high-energy and hands-on that families can enjoy together,” says Alyssa Leier, Executive Director of The Exploration Place. “We know the past few exhibits have skewed more adult, so it feels great to launch something that gets kids moving, thinking, and having fun, and is also fun for parents, too. And being able to add in stories from the Prince George Sports Hall of Fame makes it even more special. It’s a chance to connect science with local pride.”

Extreme Sports: Beyond Human Limits opens September 30, 2025, and will be on display until January 15, 2026. The exhibit is included with general admission; museum members receive free access. This exhibit is generously sponsored by Canadian Tire.
