 Who are we looking for?

We are seeking an enthusiastic, outgoing and motivated person to ensure the daily running of the Origins Kitchen café front counter. The ideal candidate is organized, with great customer service skills and willing to learn. Daily operations could include working as a barista, cashier, expeditor, ice cream station or dishwasher as needed. Everyone plays a role in The Exploration Place’s daily operations. You will be joining a team of enthusiastic and passionate individuals whose goal is to work together for the success of all departments and have fun doing it!

 What are the hours and benefits?

These are permanent 40-hour/week full-time positions. A regular workday is 8 hours, plus a 30-minute unpaid lunch break. Occasional extended hours and evenings for events will also be required.

After a 3-month probationary period, benefits include:

 Job Summary:

We are looking for those who can work closely with others and that have a desire to have a customer-forward position within our kitchen. This position will be responsible for making quality beverages or specialty hot drinks, preparing food orders, working the cash register, as well as cleaning and stocking the café. Tasks are completed in a timely and efficient manner while also providing positive customer service to guests and members.

The successful applicants will be responsible for the following:

  • Preparing a variety of tea, coffee, drinks, and ice cream by following set recipes to meet Origins standards
  • Greeting customers, making them feel welcome
  • Ensuring all applicable policies, procedures and regulations are followed
  • Answering questions and addressing any concerns about Origins Kitchen products
  • Listening to customers to gain an thorough understanding of what they need and make recommendations
  • Processing transactions, handling cash, processing debit/credit cards using a web-based POS system
  • Opening and/or closing Origins Kitchen café counter
  • Delivering excellent customer service
  • Preparing basic ingredients and food items such as children’s lunch boxes
  • Serving a variety of prepared food items such as soup, sandwiches, salads, and baked goods
  • Providing ongoing quality control (food, coffee, and the physical environment of the café and kitchen)
  • Ensuring each order is completely fulfilled before handing to guest
  • Monitoring inventory and maintaining grocery list
  • Assisting in processing, checking, and stocking inventory shipments as needed
  • Liaising with other Origins team leads or Manager to ensure the café is stocked, or needs communicated
  • Meeting performance goals set collaboratively with Manager – Origins Kitchen
  • Ensuring station is kept clean and orderly including café surfaces, floors, equipment, dishes, and utensils are tidy and sanitized on a regular schedule
  • Change station garbage and recycling bins as needed
  • Deep clean station areas according to rotating cleaning schedule
  • Attend any relevant staff meetings
  • Representing the Museum with the utmost integrity, exemplifying the values and mission of our organization
  • Other duties as assigned

 Knowledge, skills, and abilities we are looking for:

  • Canadian Citizenship or permanent resident status
  • Possess a minimum of Grade 12 Graduation Diploma, Dogwood, or equivalent
  • Ability to work closely and communicate respectfully with The Exploration Place team at large
  • Able to perform basic math, writing, and reading tasks independently
  • Possess excellent time management and multi-tasking skills
  • Independent judgement and critical thinking to problem solve when necessary
  • Able to follow written recipes or instructions
  • Possess strong oral and written communication skills
  • Be a self-motivated team player
  • Be familiar and comfortable with software, including Point of Sale Systems
  • Must show flexibility when asked to perform other tasks as needed
  • Be able to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds on select occasions and stand for long periods
  • Must be willing to present a BC Vaccine Card showing full COVID-19 vaccination and abide by all COVID-19 regulations. If, over time, Health Canada updates its definition of “fully vaccinated” (such as requiring “booster” vaccine doses), employees will be expected to comply to maintain fully vaccinated status
  • Ability to handle stressful situations while working in a fast-paced, customer-orientated facility, in cooperation with other staff and departments
  • Must be punctual and reliable

 The following will be considered an asset for this position:

  • Previous barista, kitchen, or customer service experience or training
  • Ability to regularly work evenings, holidays and/or weekends or able to with notice
  • Certificates in First Aid, FoodSafe, Serving It Right, etc.
  • Familiarity with TouchBistro POS
