First Train Across the GTPR Bridge

First Plane to Land in Prince George

In 1920, eight US Army service fliers in four DH-4 airplanes set out on a round trip from Long Island, New York, for their destination of Nome, Alaska. This bold journey was in excess of 12,000 km, and their flights through British Columbia proved to be a challenge. They arrived in Prince George, landing on an airstrip along 15th and Central on August 2nd and had an 11-day layover for repairs after one of the aircraft overshot the runway and hit a stump, tearing about four feet off the left wing. This gave the crew extra time to get to know the community, which threw a banquet and dance in honour of them at the Ritts-Kifer Hall on August 5th, where the eight men were local celebrities.
