International Day of Forests: Born of Fire

March 21 @ 1:00 pm - 1:45 pm

Celebrate International Day of Forests at The Exploration Place with a unique educational program led by Assistant Curator Chad.

Dive deep into the transformative role of fire in forest ecosystems and discover how fire influences nutrient cycling, encourages understory growth, and triggers seed germination.

Learn about the millennia-old relationship between fire and flora, focusing on how the pine genus has evolved to thrive in fiery conditions. Through an engaging exploration of fossil pinecones, conifer needle impressions, and lava from the Nazco fields, alongside contemporary plant specimens, we’ll shed light on fire’s ecological benefits, the adaptive strategies of plants to fire, and the use of fire in traditional Indigenous landscape management.

Join us for this enlightening session and gain a new perspective on the natural forces shaping our forests.
