Oscar
Our three oscars live in the tanks feeding the Living Wall in the Gaia Gallery.
Oscars are a species of freshwater fish from the cichlid family, originating in tropical South America. They can grow to be about 18 inches in length and about 3.5 lbs in weight. They are one of the most popular aquarium cichlids due to their attractive appearance and behaviour; however, they can be very territorial, resulting in aggression against other fish. They are also often mistreated, as pet owners don’t always realize how large they can become and they are sometimes kept in tanks that are much too small.
Oscars are very intelligent, and they like to interact with humans. They can develop quite a personality. Ours quite enjoy playing with a ping pong ball.
