Spirit Bear and Children Make History

Carrier Sekani Family Services, the First Nations Child & Family Caring Society, and The Exploration Place, in partnership with Lheidli T’enneh First Nation, are thrilled to bring you the new exhibit Spirit Bear and Children Make History.

Children, youth, and adults can experience this multi-media and interactive exhibit featuring hand-crafted puppets and sets from Spirit Bear’s four stop-motion animation films by the award-winning Indigenous studio Spotted Fawn Productions. Visitors will learn how Spirit Bear and the children stand up for equity for First Nations children, how to learn from the past, and how we can all work together to fulfill the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action.

Inga Andersen: The Blackout Girl Remembered

Have you ever thought about how little time it takes for people to be lost to history?

By all accounts, Prince George’s own Inga Hensina Andersen was not only a star but a virtuoso who pushed the boundaries of everything that she did. She didn’t just break ground, but she did it with grace, poise, charisma, and style. In the words of one critic:

“Miss Andersen isn’t a star, she’s a whole constellation”.

After opening the Inga Andersen School of Dance at only age 16, Inga left Prince George in 1930 to make it big in Hollywood. She became an actress and solo dancer/choreographer for the world-famous Albertina Rasch dancers, which saw her tour the world. She also starred in BBC radio dramas and performed as a cabaret artist in upscale nightclubs in England, France, and Italy.

Her talents even took her to the front lines of World War II, where she performed for troops in bombed-out buildings, earning the nickname Blackout Girl. Without the aid of microphones, she captivated soldiers with her voice and stage presence, becoming one of the first performers to boost morale at the war’s onset.

How could such a woman—once the toast of London, New York, and Paris—be forgotten? The answer remains a mystery. But by the end of this exhibition, there’s no doubt you’ll know who Inga Andersen is and why her legacy deserves to shine once more.

Photographic Reproductions

Please note: For all print requests, a $30.00 charge will be added to the invoice for the cost of having negative reproduction of the print, if one is required. If an image must be scanned from the original negative, a handling fee of $5.00 per image will be added to the initial reproduction fee. All images that are 11″ x 14″ or larger are dry-mounted to preserve the integrity of the image. Shipping and handling costs will be added to the invoice.

The Fraser-Fort George Museum Society (DBA The Exploration Place) reserves the right to refuse permission for photographic reproduction. Publication and commercial use fees are not required for research or private study, for use in theses or student papers or projects, for use by societies incorporated under the BC Society Act as a non-profit group (proof will be required), or for use in local media (newspaper articles, community cable, or TV news broadcasts). Permission fees are in addition to the original image fee.

The Curatorial Statement of Intent of the Fraser-Fort George Museum Society:

People travel from all over the world to this region to experience one of the last true wilderness environments. The philosophical basis of the Museum’s exhibitions and collections development is rooted in the forest landscape and ecosystem. Human economic activities and social history has, and will continue to be, shaped by a rich and challenging forest environment. Unlike museums in long established communities where the landscape has been entirely altered or erased, this museum must address local history, culture, science, and technology contextualized within the natural setting.

The Exploration Place intends to portray an inclusive history of Prince George. This involves depicting life during the earliest pioneer days in Prince George, the impact that diverse groups of post-contact settlers had on Indigenous communities and the landscape, and how this has shaped our region socially, culturally, and environmentally.

The E.F. Ted Williams History Centre is open Monday to Friday between 10:00 am and 5:00 pm.

The collections are available to the public by appointment only.

Research Fees

A fee of $35.00 per hour is charged to anyone conducting research in our collections. The fee is waived for students in Grades 1 through 12. The fee for secondary and post-secondary students is reduced to $20.00 per hour. A fee of $100 per hour is charged for research conducted by our curatorial team.
